

Chile started an appellation system in 1994, and there are five regions each with numerous sub-regions. But the isolation has also meant that Chile vineyards have so far never been attacked by phylloxera, meaning that unlike viticulturalists in many other part of the world, Chilean vineyards can be planted with original rootstock, saving producers the laborious job of grafting vines onto phylloxera-resistant rootstocks.

To the west is the Pacific Ocean, to the east are the Andes. Chile’s long, narrow, coastal geography has made the transportation of wines challenging over the centuries, though today it is a major exporter. Sweet wines were favored until well into the 19th century, when French immigrants began making dry wines with a decidedly French character. Chile has produced wine since the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadores brought grape vines and established vineyards. 2016 was one of the most unusual vintages in Chile in recent times, as it was much colder than usual and rained a lot. Georges Latour founded Beaulieu Vineyard in 1900, making it the oldest continuous winery in the state. Gustave Niebaum purchased a large swath of land and completed his winery in 1887, calling it “Inglenook.” Today this remains the oldest bonded winery in California. Thomas Rutherford, responsible for the appellation's name, made serious investments here in grape growing and wine production between the years of 1850 to 1880. It is also home to Napa’s most influential and historic personalities. Proprietors Isabelle and Ricardo Pea recognized their grapes potential to create the best Cabernet in Chile, and in 1996 they introduced Domus Aurea.

The sub-appellation claims some of the valley’s most prized vineyards today, namely Caymus, Rubicon and Beckstoffer Georges III. Rutherford Cabernet Sauvingons and Bordeaux Blends garner substantial attention for their enticing fragrances of dusty earth and dried herbs, broad and juicy mid-palates and lush and fine-grained tannins. The result is wine with great structure and complexity. Mountain runoff creates deep, well-drained, alluvial soils on the bench, giving vine roots plenty of reason to permeate deep into the ground. (These bench lands technically run the length of Oakville as well). Inside of the Rutherford AVA, bordering the Mayacamas, is a stretch of uplands called the Rutherford Bench. The Rutherford sub-region of Napa Valley centers on the town of Rutherford and covers some of Napa Valley’s finest vineyard real estate, spanning from the Mayacamas in the west, to the Vaca Mountains on the other side of the valley.
